Sheepvention 2023

What a start to the 2023 season!? A good solid break with pasture getting up and away.

At Boonerah, we have gone into lambing with some of the highest pasture covers in July ever with a record level of DSE’s. I would love to give you some marketing spin about how our sheep eat less, but I think it has more to do with early rain, soil temperature, nitrogen applications and rotational grazing! Growing grass is our number one objective and it is also my number one stress; Too little? Too much? Quality? When is it going to start growing? When is it going to stop? And around the cycle goes. Harvesting the grass and converting it into wonderful lamb is my passion.

It has been great talking to many of you over the last couple of months. The Boonerah and Wairere clients are of a very high calibre and achieving outstanding results and it is humbling to be a part of these businesses.

Most notably I’ve had fantastic feedback on their ewe lamb conception rates and consistent positive feedback about the finishing ability of the Boonerah Supreme terminal lambs. I have also been contacted on five different occasions by finishers blown away with their performance and consistency.

Feedback from clients over the last few months:

“Ewe lambs did 92.5% conception”

“Lambs put on 21kg in 8 weeks through winter, that’s 375g/day”

“Ewe lambs 160% and 91% in lamb”

“We finished about 2000 Boonerah blood weather lambs, they were all peas in a pod and yielded over 50%”

It was not our intention to have a stand at Sheepvention this year (farm life is busy with a newborn!), however a site became available due to a cancellation, so we will be attending this year. It will be a good opportunity to meet up with many of you before the silly season kicks in and put a name to a face and to chew the fat on all things sheep.

We will be at site 2 in the Sheep Tech pavilion, look out for the Boonerah and Wairere flags. I am looking forward to seeing you there on the 6th or 7th of August.
